Bachelor of Health Promotion

Health promotion is a multidisciplinary field of study which includes aspects from disciplines such as sociology, political science and psychology. The Bachelor of Health Promotion degree equips students with skills, including project management and population health program planning and evaluation, along with those skills required for community development roles. Graduates are provided with opportunities to learn through practice via placements in local health and community services, ensuring work readiness.
Course outline
Students will undertake core units in which they learn about the determinants of health, health promotion program planning and evaluation and project management as well as biological bases of disease, research and critical thinking, health care systems, health, culture and society, health policy and politics. They will also gain knowledge of different cultures, contexts and settings in which policy, program and prevention strategies are developed and implemented and learn to grapple with a range of issues as they apply to health promotion practice. These include organisational partnerships, community engagement, ethical issues, the importance of self reflexivity, the synthesis and application of evidence, the research/practice nexus and the important role of advocacy in promoting improved health and wellbeing outcomes. All graduates will be equipped with scientific understandings requisite to postgraduate studies in health promotion, public health, allied health, and honours and higher research degrees.
Career outlook
Graduates move into a broad range of career pathways within public health contexts locally, nationally and globally. Graduates will likely be considered for project management, junior level management positions, as well as positions in community health and government, especially local government. Graduates will also be equipped for international careers in a range of government and non-government contexts.
Course details
Three years full-time, six years part-time Berwick campus VCE prerequisites: Units 3 and 4 – a study score of at least 30 in English (ESL) or 25 in any other English.
Extra requirements
Police Check: Successful applicants must hold a National Police Records Check before undertaking fieldwork placements. Students must also hold a Working with Children Check before undertaking fieldwork placements.
